Why I'll Never Live Without Security Cameras Again

Over the years, I've had security cameras installed on my homes, and I'll be honest — in the early days, I wasn't entirely sure how much I'd actually use the footage. Would anything of note really happen? Would I just end up with hours of squirrels and passing cars?
What those cameras have recorded has genuinely surprised me. Not because crime is rampant in my neighbourhood, but because life happens — and when it does, it's an enormous relief to have it all on tape.
THE HIT & RUN THAT DIDN'T GET AWAY
A vehicle struck a parked car right outside my home and didn't stop. No note, no pause, nothing. What would have been a complete dead end for the other driver — an innocent person left dealing with damage and no answers — became an open-and-shut case. The camera had captured it all: the vehicle, the impact, the plate. That footage made all the difference.
It's a scenario most of us assume happens to other people. But parked cars get hit more often than you'd think, and without a witness or a camera, the responsible driver often walks away without consequence. In this case, they didn't.
A NEIGHBOUR'S PACKAGE, SAFELY DOCUMENTED
Security cameras aren't just about protecting your own property. My cameras have a field of view that occasionally picks up activity at neighbouring homes too — and that's proven surprisingly useful. When a delivery arrived next door and there was later a question about whether it had actually been dropped off, my footage confirmed it had. A small thing, perhaps, but exactly the kind of neighbourly moment that builds real trust on a street.
THE CLASSIC NICKY NINE DOORS
Remember being a kid and hearing about Nicky Nine Doors? Well, it still happens. My camera caught someone making their way down the street, knocking on doors and running. A harmless enough prank in isolation — but the footage made for a genuinely entertaining clip, and more importantly, it's a reminder of just how clearly these cameras pick up activity, day or night.
AMAZON AT THE DOOR — EVERY SINGLE TIME
On a lighter note, one of the most used features of my camera system is simply tracking deliveries. With online shopping a regular part of life, it's incredibly convenient to get a notification the moment a package arrives — and to have a timestamped record of every drop-off. No more wondering if something was delivered, left at the wrong door, or sitting outside in the rain longer than it needed to be.
It sounds mundane compared to catching a hit-and-run, but the peace of mind from knowing exactly when your deliveries arrive adds up day after day.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Looking back across all the homes I've had cameras on, the common thread isn't dramatic crime — it's clarity. Every one of those moments, from serious to silly, was made simpler because there was footage. No guessing, no he-said-she-said, no wondering what actually happened.
A good camera system isn't about distrust or living in fear. It's about being informed, being protected, and — more often than you'd expect — being genuinely useful to the people around you too.
If you've been sitting on the fence about having cameras installed, I'd encourage you to think about the moments above. None of them were planned for. None of them came with a warning. That's exactly the point.
