When Smart Tech Meets Real Life: Lessons from a Cumberland Install

There’s something special about working in the charming town of Cumberland, and we were happy to be back for our second install there. This time, the customer supplied their own Ring doorbell — and while the installation went smoothly, the experience reminded us of an important point we always share with clients.
Whenever you install a smart doorbell or home security camera, you’re going to see more of the world right outside your home than you might be used to. That can be both exciting and… surprising. You might notice new activity, visitors you didn’t expect, or simply more of your neighborhood than you realized before.
It’s also worth remembering that not everyone shares the same comfort level when it comes to cameras. Some neighbors value their privacy, and in certain situations, the presence of a camera can cause tension. That’s why we always review privacy features during an install. Most modern doorbells and cameras include “privacy zones” — areas you can black out so you’re not recording a neighbor’s home, driveway, or any other sensitive spot. It’s a simple setting that can help maintain good neighborly relationships.
In this particular case, despite our best efforts and conversations, the Ring doorbell ultimately had to come down and be replaced with the original one. The exact details aren’t important — life happens, situations change, and sometimes the smartest move is to undo the smart tech.
At First Born Son Home Services, we’re here for both sides of the story: getting you set up with the latest technology, and helping you take a step back when that’s the right call. Because at the end of the day, it’s about making sure your home — and your relationships — work the way you want them to.
