What AI Has Learned About Me — And Why I Do What I Do

If you’ve spent any time chatting with AI lately, you’ll know it starts to get a pretty good sense of who you are. In my case, it’s pieced together that I’m a home automation enthusiast, a bit of a gadget whisperer, a former wholesaler turned smart home specialist, and someone who believes deeply in the power of tech to simplify life—not complicate it.

But what it might not tell you (yet) is the story behind First Born Son Home Services. So here’s a little insight—from me, not the algorithm.

From Distribution to Direct Impact

I spent years in the wholesale business. It paid the bills and taught me the ins and outs of product sourcing, logistics, and margins. But deep down, I wanted something more tangible. Something that let me roll up my sleeves, solve real problems, and see the results of a job well done.

That “aha” moment came when I installed my first smart home system—first for myself, then for friends, and eventually for paying clients. There was something so satisfying about bringing tech into a home in a way that actually worked for the people living there. Not overly complex. Not buried in manuals or fine print. Just clean, helpful, and intuitive.

Why First Born Son?

The name throws people sometimes. Yes, it’s literal—I’m the first-born son. But it’s also a nod to heritage, responsibility, and pride in craftsmanship. There’s something old-school about showing up, doing the job right, and not leaving until your customer is happy. That’s the spirit I wanted to bake into the business from day one.

As for the “family” behind the name, they’re still part of the bigger picture. My wife Judi—my partner in life and soon-to-be partner in business—is eagerly planning her transition to join me here on Vancouver Island. She’s the glue that holds everything together, even from a few ferry rides away. And then there’s our son, Luke. He won’t admit it, but I’m pretty sure he inherited more of my handy instincts than he lets on. These days, he’s off forging his own path—literally—as he begins his welding career. Let’s just say the apple didn’t fall too far from the toolbelt.

It’s Not About the Gadgets. It’s About the People.

Sure, I love cameras, sound systems, automation routines, and tricking out a home like something out of a sci-fi movie. But what drives me every day is people. It’s the look on someone’s face when their new system just works. When their lights respond without delay. When they can finally stream a movie in the garage, or see who’s at the gate from their phone.

What the AI Doesn’t Know

AI may get the facts right—what I install, where I work, what brands I use—but what it can’t fully grasp is the heart of this business. That comes from lived experience. From being a husband and a father. From moving across provinces with a Prius full of tools and a vision for something different. From believing that even the most high-tech systems should come with a human touch.

So if you’re reading this and wondering what First Born Son Home Services is all about, now you know. It’s about smart homes. But it’s also about real homes, real people, and making life just a little easier.

Because in the end, the best kind of automation doesn’t replace us—it empowers us.
